127 Trip South

Hey everyone, as Tattered Tiques gets ready today for yet another road trip, I thought I'd share pictures of our last one. We started this trip in Northwestern Ohio, and headed down south to Kentucky, following Route 127 the entire way.  The trip is called The World's Longest Yard Sale.  It was filled with tons of yard sales, mini flea markets, large flea markets, horse farms, old towns, and a plethora of antiques.

 
Its hard to get lost (even though we did at least once) when you can follow one road for hundreds of miles!  Makes it pretty easy.

This was the other sign we looked for quite frequently, as we often do on our road trips.  DQ keeps us cool, and happy!

What we saw most of was really cool antique signs.  There we so many of them to choose from.  A bit out of our price range though.

Isn't she wonderful?  My brother has this same one.  Lucky guy.

Theater seating anyone?

We loved this idea.  This was from a vendor which we visit everytime we do this trip.  She had some cute stuff this year.

I loved everything about this house.  It reminded me of a home you would find in France. 

This was the front door, dilapidated and worn, but perfect.

Old homes, old buildings, old towns.  I can't get enough of them.  It's actually what I enjoy most about this trip, not the antiquing, if you can believe that.

Every, old town, old building, old door, is brimming with history.  My favorite towns on this trip were in Kentucky.  Towns like, Lexington, Danville, Harrodsburg to name a few.  They are filled with historical buildings, georgeos horse farms, tobacco fields and more.

This picture was taken in the town we ran out of gas in.  It was brutal!  We didn't realize we were running out till we were just out of town.  It was a 25 minute walk each way back to town and then back to the car in 92 degree heat.  It sucked!  I vow never to run out of gas again.  I can't believe it actually happened.  Three women in a car and they run out of gas.  How does that happen?  It threw off our whole day after that!

A rude reminder of how stupid we were earlier in our trip.

We loved all the barn quilts we saw on all the old barns.

We liked the one on the right so much, it came home with us.

So did some of these.

Found this old guy at a flea market.  He's adorable.

We went crazy for the tobacco baskets.  Anne and I each got one, and brought a few home for you as well.

 
This was a clever use of the old pop crates.  Very cool!

While in Lexington, we stayed at the historic Crowne Plaza Hotel.  It was really nice.  The rooms were decorated with beautiful horse pictures, super comfy bedding, and the outside was the epitomy of southern style.

Well, there you have it.  All in all, the 4 day trip didn't turn up all that much for us to bring home.  We did have a lot of fun though, as always, and I learned a valuble lesson.  Always, always check your gas.  Especially when you will be traveling on back country roads!  You never know when the next gas station will come along. 

Hundreds of miles from home...cost of hotels, $375, cost of trips to Dairy Queen each day, $12, cost of gas for three days trip, hundreds of dollars, cost of goods, hundreds more dollars, cost of the lesson you learn after taking a walk down the highway with your 60 year old mom and pregnant sister after running out of gas, priceless!

Ok, now it's 5:11 on Thursday, and I'm supposed to be leaving for our next adventure in 45 minutes, Oronoco MN.  Still have to shower and pack (and my house is a mess), will I ever learn?  No!

August Shop Pictures

We are home from our 4 day trip down south.  We have quite a few new things, more to come in the next few openings, but here is a sneak peak for this week.

We brought some more old frames and mirrors back, as well as a georgous old iron bed from Harrodsburg Kentucky. 

Our lavender came in this week.

We found plenty of really cool glass bottles along the way.  We had to bring back a few to pass along to you.

We also brought back a couple of really cool architectual pieces.

This trim piece is 10 feet long!  It's fabulous!

This little windmill would be adorable in a vignette.

The tobacco baskets are by far the greatest things we brought back.  Anne and I each bought one, and have a few extras for you to choose from.

Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint is coming to Tattered Tiques!

We are so excited to announce that we are distributors for Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint!!  We are so very honored to be a part of this new venture. 

We actually have not used the paint yet, but are very excited to learn all about it and begin painting with it ASAP!  Miss Mustard Seed has some informative tutorials on her blog that will help get you started.  If you are new to the paint, check out this post she did explaining the basics of the paint.

We are so excited about this new venture and will post as soon as we get our first shipment in.  We are faithful Chalk Paint™ fans, and think Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint will be the perfect companion.  Both paints have a lot of history behind them and seem to give that vintage look that we are all trying to get. Visit Miss Mustard Seed to learn more about the paint. Once we have worked with the paint, we hope to offer more tips and tricks and evenutally some classes about the paint.

A Delightful Duo

Lately we have been on a roll painting.  Maybe it's the time we have this summer at home with the kids.  Take a look at this adorable little chest painted in Old Orche and Old White Chalk Paint™.

I decided to keep the huge gold plated backs off the drawer pulls.  It looks so much cleaner this way I think. 

 

Here she is in the shop this week.  She looks so cute I think.  She got a lot of notice too.

This little piece would be great as a nightstand or little tv stand.  I love the combination of the old orche and old white details. What's your favorite chalk paint™ combo?

Minister of Music

Sometimes we find things that we just can't sell.  I'm always drawn to antique signs for some reason, and this one was no exception. 

My heart skipped a beat when I came across it.  It's perfect.  Perfectly tattered, it has the perfect combination of black and gold, and the content I love.  What is a minister of music anyway? 

I'm not sure where it will end up.  I'm thinking maybe the dining room.  Do you have any antique signs you're in love with?  

In hopes of teasing you back out to the shop next opening, we will be going on a road trip this week.  A three day, 700 mile road trip. World's Longest Yardsale to be exact.  It goes from Michigan all the way down to Alabama.  We've done it a couple of times and it's a blast!  So, we're hooking up the trailer and we're headed south.  

 

Lets go to the fair!(Re-post)

I went to the fair this weekend and planned on doing a post about it, but then I realized I did a post 2 years ago about the fair that had some great pics....so instead of reinventing the wheel...I've decided to just repost....here ya go! 

 

I(Anne) took my boys to the Lake County Fair today.  Going to the fair is top on my list of fun summer things to do.  I try and make it to at least one county fair every summer.  Call me old fashioned, but I just feel there is something so nostalgic about "going to the fair".  The rides, the games, the animals, the food...it never changes!  In fact, Lake County Fair has been going since 1852...now that's nostalgia for ya!

How could something be so ugly and so beautiful at the same time!

Some bunny loves this bunny!  This was the only cage at the entire fair with a huge colorful name tag.  I LOVE that some child wrote this and displayed it so brilliantly. Mr. Sniffles is one lucky bunny!

A Passion for Provence

A few months ago, this dresser was painted in Chalk Paint™  .  The color, Provence.  It wasn't quite finished when it went out on the floor.  I knew it needed a whole lot of something, but wasn't sure what.  So it sat for a few weeks, unnoticed.  That was untill it got it's makeover.

 
This is what it looked liked before it was finished.  It's cute, a great size, but borring.

 

Here she is with a little more love put into her.  

 

 

It's makeover consisted of heavy distressing, a little gilding cream, and glaze.  It turned out beautiful.  What have you done with your Chalk Paint™ lately? 

 

 

Exciting News!

Is't offical, we are Offical Annie Sloan Stockists.  We are very excited about this, to say the least.  We have been selling the paint since last fall for our friend Michelle at  Di Lucca Design.  But now, we have joined her and the other Annie Sloan Stockists and are very proud to be a part of this family!
